Tinnitus Home Remedies

Tinnitus is a condition that affects millions of adults in the United States every year, largely defined as being a ringing in the ears. If you are suffering from this condition, you don’t have to live with it. Treatments are available and often provide much needed relief. Visit your doctor to ensure that you do not have an underlying medical condition contributing to symptoms. If this is ruled out, there are some home remedies that may reduce or eliminate symptoms completely. Here are some home remedies you may wish to try to see if they help get rid of the ringing in the ears. One must know that it’s impossible to completely eliminate noise in the ears.

Avoid alcoholic beverages and eliminate any beverages from your diet that contain caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine may both increase symptoms.
Limit use of aspirin and any products which contain aspirin. Naproxen, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should also be limited.

Get regular exercise. This increases blood flow to the ears. It is best to avoid extended exercise periods though, such as bike riding, which hyperextend the neck for a long period of time.

Quit smoking and using smokeless tobacco products. Products containing nicotine reduce blood flow to the ears. As a result, symptoms get worse.

Try these home remedies to see if symptoms decrease to a tolerable level or go away completely. While you wait for the remedies to work, you may wish to try some coping mechanisms. Here are a few that patients have tried with great results.

Play background noise in quiet rooms. Use a white noise machine at bedtime or cut on a fan or other device.
Direct your attention to other things so the tinnitus isn’t as noticeable.

Limit exposure to loud noises or avoid them completely. When you must be around these noises, make use of earmuffs or protective earplugs.
Learn relaxation techniques. Studies have shown that fatigue and stress make symptoms worse. The more relaxed you are, the less noticeable the symptoms will be.

Take ginkgo biloba. Studies have been done that show this may be of benefit. Others have shown no improvement with use of this supplement. Try it to see if it reduces symptoms for you.

If other symptoms develop, seek medical care immediately. Any symptoms  related to nerve damage or significant hearing loss must be checked. The same is true if symptoms increase in severity or frequency or appear after an ear injury. In cases such as this, medical treatment is needed right away for the best results.
